A shim is a thin piece of metal used in automobiles to fill gaps between parts and components. Without a shim to hold the pieces in place, certain parts could wear out due to grinding against one another or vibrations as the vehicle moves. Shims can also help to reduce noise caused when parts of the machine rattle against one another by locking the part into place, making it impossible for them to rattle against each other.
