Type F thread-cutting screws have a tapered point that can cut threads in existing holes. A Type F self-cutting screw works well in sheet metal, plastic, resin-impregnated plywood, brass, bronze and most cast materials. Once in place, Type F thread-cutting bolts are highly resistant to vibration, shear, tension and torque. For this reason, these are the most common thread-cutting screws for cars and trucks.
Type F self-cutting screws follow SAE design guidelines, so they’re only offered in inch-based sizes. The tapered end of these screws has small slots cut across it to collect metal shavings, allowing these bolts to cut a new thread without clogging.
